Brass Services

Our skilled brass technicians will work with you to restore, repair, and protect your instrument. Below is a list of the services generally available. Please bring your instrument by our shop in Boston for an evaluation. Learn more about the repair process on our Repair Shop page.

Professional Clean: A complete rejuvenation of the instrument, starting with disassembly, degreasing and cleaning, the replacement of all felts, corks, and other adjustment materials, reassembly and fresh lubrication, and a test play. A professional clean will return the instrument to an optimal playing condition, and is recommended 1-2 times per year depending on how much you play.

Silver Polishing: Available for silver euphoniums and tubas, this service will restore the brilliant luster of the silver plate. Over time, silver undergoes an oxidization reaction when exposed to air. This oxidation appears as a black or sometimes blue coating on the instrument. The need for polishing can be reduced via anti-tarnish strips, available at our shop.

Resolder Brace/Joint: Braces hold the instrument together and may break if the instrument falls or is subject to repeated stresses. In this process, the broken joint is cleaned and soldered back together with a high-quality solder selected by our technicians to preserve the acoustical properties of the instrument. The area around the solder joint is cleaned and scraped to provide a seamless join.

Dent Removal: specialized tools and processes allow us to remove almost any dent as if it didn't happen. Dents can inhibit the airflow and change the tone of the horn, plus look unsightly even from afar. The cost of the repair varies with the accessibility, size, and sharpness of the dent.

Patches: Holes and cracks in the instrument are uncommon, but can be repaired with a small metal patch. Our technicians use only the amount of material necessary to cover the hole, resulting in minimal impact to the sound.

Lap Piston Valve: When the valve casing suffers a minor dent or deformity, or the piston is actuated with sideways pressure, the piston and casing may no longer interface smoothly due to uneven contact. Lapping evens out the two surfaces to ensure the piston slides smoothly and evenly in the valve.

Install Trumpet Leadpipe: The leadpipe interfaces between the mouthpiece and the horn. Changing the leadpipe or replacing a damaged leadpipe can significantly influence the feel and sound of the horn. In this procedure, the old leadpipe is removed and a new leadpipe is installed instead.

Trombone Handslide Service: A complete clean of the inner and outer slides, removing all material deposits and oil, followed by a careful alignment of the slides, removing any bowing or bends. Minor dents are also addressed (we will contact you if there are any dents beyond the scope of the service), followed with relubrication and assembly and a fresh waterkey cork.

Replacement Parts: Components of the horn such as bumpers, corks, felts, springs, strings, 3rd slide stop nuts, and lyre screws can be replaced if needed.
