Bach's small shank trombone mouthpieces are a great option in a wide range of sizes to suit every playing style. The rim size is denoted with numbers, as the value goes up, the rim becomes smaller, providing more flexibility and high-end extension, but usually less control and reach in the low end. It is recommended to try mouthpieces in person to find the correct piece for your particular embouchure and instrument, but for starting out we have some recommendations-
For beginners, young players, or those looking for control and high-end extension, the 12C is an ideal choice, providing facility and ease of playing.
The 5, 6 1/2 AL, and 7 are more typical options for orchestral or concert band players looking for a blending, balanced sound, suitable for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd parts alike. The 5 is more suited for ensemble playing, while the 7 is a great option for chamber music.
We carry 12C's with gold plated rims for a different feel. Some players prefer this to the standard silver plating.
We also carry fully-gold-plated 6 1/2 AL's and 7C's
